Honors student Mario Sordello Jr. completed his literature search on evaluating psychopharmacological treatments on psychosis.

Abstract:

Psychosis is a cluster of symptoms that result in a loss of contact with reality.   Those who experience psychosis face aversive symptoms that negatively impact their life and create great struggle.  The objective of this literature review was to create a holistic understanding between the efficacies of the different treatment methods.  A literature review from 2000-2024 was conducted across the database PsychINFO to assess the efficacy of treatments.  31 articles in total were selected.  Findings show some medication to be more effective than others, and for medication to not be effective over a long period of time.  All therapies were proven effective and some having effects maintained upon follow-ups.  All trials of combining medication and therapy were shown to be overall more effective.  Treatments that did not fall into the three distinguished categories of treatment were considered alternatives. All three treatments were shown to be effective in reducing psychosis symptoms, but medication alone does not sustain the effects over a long period of time.  Combination of treatment were shown to be superior.  Providing treatment that is personalized towards the individual to fit their needs and preferences will ensure proper care towards their recovery and well-being.
